Craftsy Class Review: Easy Fitting the Palmer/Pletsch Way: Pants

January 19, 2016 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hello guys,

Thank you for visiting On the Cutting floor.  This is the Craftsy Class Review: Easy Fitting the Palmer/Pletsch Way: Pants20160115155223

hi there,

Thank you for visiting us today.

If you are new at my blog, please remember to check are free pattern section and tutorials.

This is the review of the Craftsy Class:  Easy Fitting, the Palmer / Pletsch way:  Pants.

I wanted to review this class for you, because I became a fan of the Palmer / Pletsch way to fit pants since I bought their famous book.

book-pantsrealpeople-2ndEd-lrg

I was happy to find this book on a thrift store some years ago.  The book is very useful and practical, showing great examples of pant fitting.

I was able to find exactly the solution to the issues I had with my pants.

Knowing that Palmer / Pletsch method was easy to follow and very convenient (there is no muslin fitting) I wanted to watch the Craftsy Class and learn a bit more about it.

THE CLASS:

The class is instructed by Melissa Watson, Pati Palmer’s daughter.  She has a very interesting background in fashion and has created patterns for ______________

Craftsy’s Description of the class is the following:

” Discover techniques for creating perfect-fitting pants quickly, easily and consistently. No muslins or trial-and-error necessary! Join sewing experts Pati Palmer and Melissa Watson as they teach you to use tissue-fitting techniques for different body types and a variety of figure variations. Start with how to choose the correct pattern size for your body and even how to fit yourself without a partner. Build the skills to recognize when pattern areas such as the thighs, tummy, backside, crotch length and more need adjustment. Then, learn to make all the necessary alterations right on the tissue pattern! The results are pants with a flattering fit, every time from front to back and top to bottom.”

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CLASS:

Fitting yourself:  Probably 99% of the time, the fitting process is made by myself, alone at home.  I do not have a sewing buddy to help me to check the fitting of the pattern.  During the class, Melissa teaches how to fit the pattern yourself.

I thought that it was great.

It was an easy class to follow:  The examples were great to understand different fitting issues and how the Palmer / Pletsch way can be easily adapted to any pants.

Free Pattern:  The class comes with the pattern used on the examples.  Great way to start!  So, you can follow it at home and do the changes you will need.

The waistband method:  In lesson 7, there is a waistband method that you won’t want to miss, trust me.  I will be making my next pair of pants with it.

THE LESSONS:  Here are some screenshots of the class:

Craftsy Class Review: Couture Dressmaking Techniques

December 3, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting On the Cutting Floor today.

If it is your first time here, please take your time to check our PDF patterns and sewing tutorials.  You might find something lovely 🙂

This is the review of Couture Dressmaking Techniques by Alison Smith at Craftsy Sewing Classes.

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links to Craftsy.

20151201134738

This is the second class I have watched from Allison Smith.  The first one, Couture Finishing techniques was a deal breaker for me.  I learned a considerable amount of techniques through it as I very much enjoyed the whole class.

This new class, specifically made to teach techniques on dressmaking.  I believe this class can be very useful if you are working on a current dress project or you would like to learn a few more tricks about couture dressmaking.

The part that I have enjoyed the most was boning.  Allison mentioned that boning is one of her favorite couture techniques…and it shows!

She really made it very clear and easy to understand for a complete newbie on the topic.

I have also loved the way she makes the darts.  Very obvious but it blew my mind.

I will highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to upgrade her sewing skills and take them to the next level.

What you will get with this class:

Lesson 1. Introduction & Making a Muslin

Lesson 2. Understanding Underlinings

Craftsy Class Review: Sew Quick, Quicker, Quickest

Craftsy Class Review: Sew Quick, Quicker, Quickest

There is something about giving people options to sew in different ways that it is appealing to me.  It empowers the viewers as well as liberating them from steps on the process that have been troublesome.

The class is especially useful for beginner and intermediate sewists, since it will help them to learn a few tricks and tips to simplify and fasten the sewing process without making your projects to look less professional.

THE INSTRUCTOR

I have enjoyed the class very much.  There were a few tips that I knew from before, but Sue Hausmann (the instructor) has a great pace for the class, and a good sense of humor through the lessons, that made it easier to watch the lessons completely.

Besides, I appreciated her energy and clarity on the steps.

I loved when she mentioned that ”there is no right way to sew, but what is right for you” Yay for wisdom!

WHAT IS IT INCLUDED WITH THE CLASS?

  1. Lesson 1: Stay stitching

2. Lesson 2: Basting

3. Lesson 3: Seams

20151113154537
     4. Lesson 4: Darts and Ease

20151114112725

     5. Lesson 5: Facings
    6. Lesson 6: Waistbands
     7. Lesson 7: Zippers
20151115154157

SOME THINGS I LEARNED WITH THIS CLASS

Stay Stitching

The three steps zig-zag

the magic of the drier sheet

Basting

Pin basting is a very, very clever way to speed up the process, until you watch the quickest way to baste…

No more to say than just visit this amazon store  (affiliate) and Check on this Craftsy Class to get the idea.

Darts and Ease

How to add some easy on a dartless top

And much more!

I hope this review has helped you to know more about the class and decide the best for you.

Happy Sewing!

Review: Sew Better, Sew Faster: Advanced Industry Techniques

November 20, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hi there,

Thanks for visiting On the Cutting Floor today.  This is my  review for the “Sew Better, Sew Faster:  Advanced Industry Techniques” a class produced by Craftsy, featuring Janet Prey, founder of President of Janet & Company, Inc. (Islander Sewing Systems)

If this is your first time in our blog, remember to check our FREE SEWING PATTERNS page.

On that page you will find our collection of free sewing patterns for women, kids and men.

You can also visit our SEWING TUTORIALS and our SEWING REVIEWS.

We also have an ETSY STORE, where you will find unique and modern sewing pattern for women.

Janet Prey has already published three classes on Craftsy, specializing on Garment Industry Techniques.

Review: Sew Better, Sew Faster: Advanced Industry Techniques

Some of her more valuable tips:

INTERFACING: ON THE FACING OR THE MAIN PIECE?

THE BURRITO TECHNIQUE

When she was explaining the technique, and I was having that ”revelation” moment…I wanted to run to the sewing machine and rip of the Sofia skirt facing and make it again with THAT technique.

This part, for me, pays off the price of the class.  It will make my work so much faster! and the finished garment looks very professional.

WHY YOU NEED TO TRIM YOUR CORNERS

SUSHI AND SEWING ARE GREAT COMPANIONS

FORGET WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT FRENCH SEAMS

WELT BUTTONS CAN BE SO EASY!

I have learned more from her classes that I had in the one-on-one sewing lessons that I used to have (I wish I knew this before spending $500!)

Her classes make me always feel like I am sewing with my aunt, in a comfy sewing room.

She has this supportive, yet very clear point with the techniques shown.  Her classes feel very personal and I love that; She sews and explains everything with such a confidence, that I truly trust what she is doing.

This is the list of lessons including in this class:

Review: Sew Better, Sew Faster: Advanced Industry Techniques by Janet Pray

1. Lesson 1. Introduction and Cutting

2. Lesson 2.  Getting Started Sewing

3. Lesson 3. Fusible Interfacings

4. Lesson 4. About Zippers
5. Lesson 5. About Waistbands
6. Lesson 6. About Buttonholes

7. Lesson 7. Seam Finishes & Hems

You can purchase this class here (affiliate link)

Other classes from Janet Pray:

Tutorial: PatternMaker USA

October 29, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hi there,

Thank you for visiting us today.

I would like to talk a bit about Pattern Maker USA Software.

20150918065645

If you have visited On the Cutting Floor before, you might have noticed that PatternMaker has become an official sponsor of this site;  they have generously accepted to participate on a series of tutorials and free patterns for you.

To check on the first pattern I made using PatternMaker, please check Amy Skirt Pattern Here

This is the first tutorial I made for them, but they will be a comprehensive series of tutorials published every month,

If you are interested to know more about them, before purchasing your first patternmaking software, sign up for our newsletter to be the first one to know about the tutorials.

Now let’s see the first tutorial 😀

HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE BASIC VIEWER

  1.  Visit PatternMaker website.
  2. Click on Product and then on PatternMaker
  3. Now you will see a few options on your right side.  Click on Basic Viewer.

20151023085807

4.  Now click on download.

The basic viewer will help you to check on 3 custom fit patterns: bodice, pants and collars.

The program comes with added sizes, but you can customize the custom blocks by adding your measurements.  We will see that on detail later.

20151023090132

5.  Now, you will see that the program has been downloaded into your computer.  It won’t take more than 1 minute to do so.

Click on that.

20151023090527

6.  At this point you will see the Setup Wizard popping out on your screen.

Install the program.

20151023090717

7.  Open the program.

There are some very interesting options to check in here. For now, let’s focus on the bodice block and how to customize it.

Click on the yellow bodice on the left side of the screen.  That will open the free ”macros” from the program ( macro is a pattern template)

20151027074000

8.  Click on Leena’s file

20151027074752

9.  Now you will see the file called ”free stuff”.  Women 1 file and others can be purchased on the website.

20151027074820

10.  Then, the 3 free block patterns will show.

Click on Fitting Bodice

20151027074839

11.  There are a few options to choose from.  I have chosen the princess line to shoulder option for this tutorial.

20151027074906

12.  Then, you will need to choose the pattern size.  PatternMaker software comes with sizes from 32 to 52.

As you can see, the first measurement is mine 😀

Let’s see how to do that!

20151027074933

13.  After clicking on the measurement.  The program will ask you for the seam allowance on the pattern.  My settings are in centimetres, so the seam allowance is 1cm ( 3/8 inch)

20151027075019

CUSTOM MEASUREMENTS

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click create measurements
  3. Add a name to this file
  4. Start adding your (or your customer) measurements.
  5. Click Ok.
  6. A file has been created!

20151027075203

14.  Now the pattern will show as required.

20151027075247

PRINTING

  1. You can preview the way your pattern will print, by clicking on VIEW tab, then PAGE GRID
  2. Remember to check on the printing set up to see if your page format (letter, A4, etc)

20151027075339

3.  Go to FILE and PRINT

Here you can see the number of ages to print, the arrangement and also choose if you want to print a scaled pattern.

20151027075404

CHECKING THE FABRIC REQUIREMENT

  1.  Click SETTINGS, then click CONFIGURE
  2. In this area you can change the Dimension Units (inches, centimetres) and the fabric width.
  3. Set the fabric width you need and click OK

20151027080948

4.  The dotted red lines are showing you the fabric requirement.20151027081154

5.  Check on the screen upper right side.  The yard requirements are set.

If you click on the tab, you can also adjust the fabric width.

20151027081545

20151027081607

And that it is all for now!

I hope you enjoy PatternMaker USA software as much as I do.

Happy Sewing!
