This is a very easy tutorial, and by choosing the right zipper you can add a nice feature on any skirt, dress, pants or tops.
Materials:
- standard zipper.
- 2 1/2 x zipper length of woven interfacing.
- coordinating thread
- zipper presser feet
- sewing supplies: pins, scissors, iron
Sewing Tutorial: How to insert an exposed zipper
- Gather your materials and supplies
2. Add the woven interfacing strips to the area where the zipper will be inserted, and then press the strips to the wrong side of the fabric. Check the length of the zipper and the strips is the same.
3. Place the fabric pieces together, right sides facing.
4. Pin both fabrics together, from the end of the interfacing strips to the rest of the fabric.
5. Now, you will need to stitch the fabrics together. Please check the seam allowance indicated in your project for this. I used 3/8 inch for this sewing tutorial.
6. Then, you will need to snip the fabric with a diagonal line. I clipped a total of 5/8 inch, so there will be 1/4 inch of exposure for the zipper.
7. Now, turn the fabric to the wrong side and press the fabric with your iron.
8. Now, place fabric and zipper right side up and check that the zipper is centered.
9. Now, pin one side of the zipper
10. Stitch the zipper to the fabric.
11. Repeat step 9 and 10 on the other side of the fabric.
12. Now, take the bottom of the fabric and the zipper and stitch them together.
13. Finally, trim the fabric from the sides of the zipper about 1/4 inch.
