TUTORIAL:  Circus Finger Puppets

March 19, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hi, Alicia from Felt With Love Designs here again! I am continuing my circus toy theme today with the second set in my series of circus finger puppets (Set 1, in case you missed it.) If you are enjoying these finger puppets, don’t miss the woodland finger puppets* we designed last month. Circus Finger Puppets - Set 2

I started the series with a set of circus “buildings” and pick up now with the first set of characters. I will continue with a few more characters, animals, and vehicles so be sure to follow along! Supplies needed:

  • The Pattern
  • Felt (skin tone, white, black, pink, bright pink, blue, light blue, red, brown)
  • Embroidery thread to match
  • Scissors (these* are my favorite for cutting precisely)
  • Freezer paper (optional – see my tutorial on using freezer paper to precisely cut your pattern)

To sew the circus ringleader:

  1. Cut all of the pieces from felt
  2. Sew the white undershirt to the front body piece
  3. Sew the red waistband to the bottom of the undershirt Circus FP 2 - undershirt
  4. Sew the black jacket pieces to the corresponding sides Circus FP 2 - jacket
  5. Sew the red portions of the jacket to the front and the red bow tie overlapping a little, just under the face
  6. Sew the mustache to the face Circus FP 2 - bowtie
  7. Sew the red band to the hat Circus FP 2 - hat
  8. Sew the hat to the top of the head, at an angle
  9. Embroider the facial features Circus FP 2 - face 2
  10. Match up the embellished front with the back and stitch them together, using a blanket stitch, leaving the bottom open. I also go back and stitch just the front edge of the opening with a blanket stitch to reinforce it but that is totally optional. Circus FP 2 - ringleader

To sew the circus girl:

  1. Cut all of the pieces from felt
  2. Sew the pink dress to the front body piece Circus FP 2 - dress
  3. Sew the bright pink stripe to the front of the dress
  4. Sew the hair to the top of her head Circus FP 2 - hair
  5. Embroider the facial features Circus FP 2 - face
  6. Match up the embellished front with the back and stitch them together, using a blanket stitch, leaving the bottom open. I also go back and stitch just the front edge of the opening with a blanket stitch to reinforce it but that is totally optional.

Circus FP 2 - girl To sew the man with the dumbbell:

  1. Cut all of the pieces from felt
  2. Sew the clothing to the front body piece Circus FP 2 - suit
  3. Sew the light blue stripe to the front of the suit
  4. Position the dumbbell between the character’s hands and sew in place
  5. Sew the mustache to the face Circus FP 2 - dumbbells and mustache
  6. Embroider the facial features Circus FP 2 - barbell face
  7. Match up the embellished front with the back and stitch them together, using a blanket stitch, leaving the bottom open. I also go back and stitch just the front edge of the opening with a blanket stitch to reinforce it but that is totally optional. Circus FP 2 - strong man

I hope you enjoyed these simple finger puppets! Be sure to come back and check out the rest of the series!
