Craftsy Class Review: Design your Own Bags

June 6, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Hello and Welcome to On the Cutting Floor, this is the Craftsy Class Review: Design your Own Bags

PicMonkey Collage

Craftsy Class:  Design your Own HandBags.

If this is your first time in our blog, remember to check our FREE SEWING PATTERNS page.

On that page you will find our collection of free sewing patterns for women, kids and men.

You can also visit our SEWING TUTORIALS and our SEWING REVIEWS.

We also have an ETSY STORE, where you will find unique and modern sewing pattern for women.

You can also sign up for our newsletter on the sidebar of this post, so you will never miss a post!

I have always had the desire to make my own, stylish bag.  No ugly polyester stuff, you know.

However, I turn to put the projects off…for a while.  I feel overwhelm by the details, not knowing where to start.  Where do I get my materials?  what do I need to buy?  What type of fabrics work better?, etc.

So, I decided to purchased this class created by Brett

The topics that will cover are:

Materials

Planning your design

20150603083819

Reinforcing your fabric

Constructing the basic exterior

20150603083958

Construction basic lining

Pockets

Handles and straps

Zippers

20150603084146

Closures and hardware

20150603084737

Shape variations

What I liked:

  • I am a huge fan of the format of Craftsy Classes in general.  It is easy for me to follow, stop, continue any other day, re watch the lessons whenever I needed, etc.
  • That is the reason I love to purchase them and talk about what I have learned.
  • Bret Bara, the instructor is great on the topic, easy to follow and likable ( you know, the type of person you see and think ”she can be my best friend” )
  • I learned A LOT about the materials needed, the step by step process and the hardware needed (now I have my list of materials ready!)

What I did not like

I must say, I am satisfied with the class, but I felt that I was missing something.

Even though Bret is able to give all the details to create your own bag, the idea of the class is that you ”design your bag”, but the class is a beginners level. This is, for me, a bit contradictory.

If it is a beginners class, I would expect to see a pattern included.  I know; to re-create the bags shown can’t be too difficult, but it will depend on the level of expertise of the sewist.

IF you feel that you need an extra help with a handbag pattern or tutorial, you can check this roundup I made a few months ago

I would recommend this class to someone who has made a few bags in the past and would like to perfect the techniques.

Design your own bag is a class that you can purchase now for 19.99.

Craftsy Class Review: 40 Techniques Every Sewer Should Know

I got this class a few months ago and it is the very first class that I watched and finished the same day.

And I loved every part of it.

I usually watch my Craftsy classes while sewing, I makes me feel in the mood 🙂

One of the things that I liked the most about ”40 Techniques every sewer should know’‘ is that it has the ability to keep you interested:  the pace is good and the tips are great.

Besides, I love how Gail Yellen, the instructor, is able to demonstrate every single technique with an smart and interesting point of view.

I really enjoy the fact that she has chosen to show ”before and after” sequences or projects finished ”with and without” certain techniques.  She certainly makes her point!

I also love that this class has become a recurrent reference class for me:  every time I need to recall on a specific technique, I watch the part of the lesson again.

Craftsy Class Review: Couture Finishing Techniques

March 31, 2015 by Daniela Leave a Comment

Thank you for visiting On the Cutting Floor.  This is Craftsy Class Review: Couture Finishing Techniques

If this is your first time in our blog, remember to check our FREE SEWING PATTERNS page.

Craftsy Class Review: Couture Finishing Techniques

I have decided today to make a review of the Couture Finishing Techniques.  I got this class last week when I realized it was for sale half price 🙂 (isn’t it the best way to get your wish list classes? )

Even though I have been waiting for this class, I was a little scared about it: would this be for a skill level that I have not accomplished?

It must be the name: Couture Finishing Techniques.
I kept thinking that it will be too much for me.  But I decided to give it a shot.

Big was my surprise when I realized the instructor, Alison Smith, is the author of two of my favorite sewing books:

Favorite Alison Smith’s Books
After knowing that, I was more relaxed.
The reason I love, and strongly recommend her books, is because of the clarity of her explanations; I have already learned so much from them that I was now ready to enjoy my Craftsy Class. But now the question was: Will I learn anything that I have not seen on her books before?
What I have learned
One of the most remarkable things about Craftsy Classes is to get you inspired.
I remember taking Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials a few months ago.
At the moment I have the same feeling: What if this is too much for me?  After that lesson, I felt like I was ready to try sewing with knits and rock it!
It gave me the confidence to try something new, something that I thought it was not for me:

Craftsy Class Review: Couture Finishing Techniques

The same is applicable to Couture Finishing Techniques:

The Couture Finishing Techniques are not more difficult, they just require more time

But, who wouldn’t like to have these finishes on a wardrobe?

What I love about this class
The instructor:As a former teacher, I really enjoy to see someone who knows how to get her point. For me, there are two types of teachers:  The ones with themselves in mind and the ones with their students in mind.

Alison is the second type.
Alison Smith is a person who has taught sewing for many years.  However, her skills are to the service of the viewer.

Her lessons were clear, easy to follow, and inspiring
Her simple but so practical instructions will make you to be ready to go and try these new learned techniques immediately.

There were also very inspiring; I have never thought about the scalloped hems on the way she made them or the circular buttonhole, who knew?

What will you get with this class:

7 HD Videos covering the following techniques:

  1. Introduction ( and amazing look of a 60’s Haute Couture Dress)
  2. Hand Sewn Stitches
  3. Finish Seams
  4. Buttonholes
  5. Concealed Zipper
  6. Closures
  7. Hems

You can also find more information about this class here.
